Public Hygeine & Sanitation Problems in India

Nearly half of India's 1.2 billion people have no toilet at home, but more people own a mobile phone, according to the latest census data.

Public Hygeine

People do not care about public hygiene, and they do not realize that keeping environment clean is societal obligation.

Indis atill lags behind in cleanliness and public hygeine.t is not just humans who dirty Indian public spaces: even stray animals who are uncared for such as street dogs and cows use the open spaces for defecating. This makes it very difficult to walk on footway or steet. Such sanitation problems have generally been ignored, with neither the state nor the citizens accepting responsibility and taking the matter seriously.

Litter

As Sriram Vadlamani writes:

“No body in India thinks that litter is a problem at all. Majority of Indians are used to throwing trash on the road. In fact, Indian roads double up as parking spaces, trash cans, temporary storage for construction materials, and free loading docks for enterprises.”

Plastic

The use of plastic, steel and other non-biodegradable products have had tremendous impact on the country’s environmental degradation and litter problem. Although the use of plastic bags is being banned in some cities, littering habits have not changed among the population and plastic is still being used by most of the population as a cheaper alternative to biodegradable products. Popular sites in the country such as beaches, rivers and monumental sites are equally littered with plastic and other waste materials.

Sanitation problems

There are a number of other sanitation problems which dirty the streetscapes of India apart from littering. This includes spitting, using public spaces for toiletry needs as a result of the lack of good public toilets.

Professor Jayati Ghosh from JNU admits that:

“Sanitation remains our worst concern. India is the least improved country when it comes to access to proper sanitation. In some places, modern toilets have been set up but they have no water. We have the largest population in the world that defecates in the open.”

Spitting on street and corners

Spitting on the streets is another habitual Indian concern. Although in the West it is considered rude and a social taboo, in India it has become socially acceptable. t is not only visually unpleasant to see, but can spread bacterial diseases and is a major health concern of which most of the population is unaware.

Indian public spaces are poorly maintained. As the population in India continues to grow into the billions, with economic limitations, it has been difficult for Indians to give particular attention to their outside environment. Sanitation problems such as litter, lack of public toilets and spitting on the streets are a growing concern which hinders not only the quality of the environment but also the global image of Indian society as a whole.

Cleanliness is the responsibility of every citizen of India. Of Course, the charity begins from home. First of all we should clean our house and surrounding where we are living. In other countries you can't throw a single piece of garbage any where and if you do you will be punished by law but in our country we Indian including me. We throw garbage anywhere and we don't ask the owner about dustbin. So cleanliness is our moral duty and a responsibility and we can't escape from it.

We should spread awareness about hygiene and sanitation in public through media by campaign.

Corruption – the most dangerous bug in our home

It’s the time citizens of India need to unite and fight the corruption in the country. This is the time when we all need to come together and sought the voice of India and the common man of India. This is the high time. We all are fade up of corruption. But it is not the politicians and the government servants only who are corrupt but we all are involved in some or the other way.

None of your legal work or issue can be resolved without giving the bribe. You want a passport, you go to the police station for the criminal verification, you give 200 Rs for getting the clean certificate even if you have not committed a single crime in your entire life or even if you have not seen the police station in your entire life. You want a driving license, go to the RTO, you would keep struggling getting the license if you are not hiring any RTO agent. Because the money you give to the RTO agent flows from bottom to top !

It is not the case that only the government officers and politicians are corrupt only. We the public are also not excluded. If you are caught on the traffic signal breaking the red light, you will give 50-100 Rs to the cop and try to settle the matter there which will save you from the actual penalty which may be more that what you are giving to the cop as a bribe. You think of yourself only that you have saved some money but what you are doing is corruption. I am not saying that I have not done corruption in my life. Being in this corrupt system you are forced to do so if you want the quick results.

From this traffic cop I remember an incident happened to me 2 years ago. I was new to Pune. It might have been 5-6 months I had been transferred to Pune from Hyderabad. I was going home at around 6 in the PM. There is a traffic signal just besides the gate of my company. It was yellow light and I was almost in the middle of the crossing the side so I though to cross the road instead of stopping there in the middle. The yellow light turned into red and the cop stopped me just right there. I argued that it was yellow when I started to cross the signal but the cop refused to listen to any one of them. He asked for the license. I saw the license. So he asked for the PUC and I saw PUC. Still he was determined to rob me ! He asked for the RTO registration book and other documents and I there I was. Unfortunately I did not have the documents and even the photo copies of them. All of them were at home. He did not agree to my arguments. He asked for some thousand rupees !! On such incidents you think that you should be aware of some common laws and rules which can save you sometime. At last I had to settle the matter there and I gave 100 bucks to the cop. I felt so much guilty as I had given the bribe to the cop. I had not committed any offence though I had to give money. The only fault of mine was that I did not have the photo copies of the RC book of my bike.

Corruption has spread across almost everywhere. You see a road in your city being under construction for more than 2 years, but it will take only a monsoon season to deconstruct it !! What a hight of corruption ! You see a metro bridge construction which collapses even before it is completed and innocent people dies. Instead of accepting the guilt, these babus claim that it was technical mistake and the people responsible were those who were building them. After every monsoon when you are driving in the city, you feel like you are in fear factor competition. You do not find even a 5 meter road without the holes. And the holes are of 1-2 feet deep ! Why am I suffering this when I am paying very high taxes to the government ? Just because these babus and the officers can fill up their homes with all that money ? Everyday we hear the news of some new scam. 2G, CWG, illegal mining, illegal foreign exchange and so on…..Not now. This is the high time and we need to raise our voice against the corruption.

The battle of corruption can not be fought until we all are united. The battle of corruption can not be fought until we are determined not to do any corruption. The battle of corruption can not be fought until an individual takes an oath not to give bribe and not to do the corruption. The fight has to be start from one and all.

There is a great man out there in Delhi fighting for all of us through non violence and fasting. Yes, we all should support Annaji and his great cause for the nation of India. Let us raise our voice against the corruption and support Annaji and his team through whatever way we can.

New rupees symbol and the India's optimism !!

It gives me immense pleasure as an Indian that we are now among the exclusive club of the countries which have their own symbol for their currency. It will soon appear on the Indian currency and will get its place in the world economy. It will raise India's economic profile. The symbol very well represents the Devnagri and Roman script. At the same time it also represents the present Indian culture - Original Indian culture influenced by the western culture.

But this is not it !! India is very optimistic for the symbol that it will raise the profile of Indian economy in the world economy . there is hardly any justification for this optimism. The basic reason why any currency would have its own symbol is so that it can easily be distinguished in the global financial transactions. At present the US Dollar, Japanese Yen, British Pound and European Euro are the most freely convertible currencies in the global financial transactions. Indian Rupee is nowhere used for any international financial transactions. So unless and until the Indian currency gets its place in the international transactions the symbol for the Indian currency will not get its place in the global economy. We are fool if we think that the world will eagerly take to the new rupee symbol.

We live in a country where we can see the growing economy but the signs of it is visible in the smallest part of the country. There is a huge region in the country which is still not getting the basic things of the life to live. We live in a country where 15 out of 28 of its states are having the violent internal conflicts. Despite of this growing economy we see the urban-rural divide, very high unemployment rate, farmer suicides and chronic hunger ! We might see the days when all of the states of the country will be infected by this problems.

To tackle all of these problems and to prove the meaning of the symbol we need to do something for the country so that the next generation of the country can live in the peaceful India with the very powerful economy in the world.

The best way for this is to start with the youth of the country. As Chetan Bhagat's recent article 'The Wrong Diagnosis' in the TOI, he has shouted about all of these problems in the country and how to tackle them ! I suggest you read the article and not only just read it try to implement it. Do something for the country before its too late !!
